I feel like such an oldie for writing this, but it has been more than 12 years since my uni days. When we were in Perth a couple of months ago, we took the kids to the UWA campus to show them where we used to go to school, and also to look at the resident peacocks - I cannot believe they are still there! Walking through the university grounds brought back many fond memories - of hours spent at lectures and labouring over assignments, projects and my final year thesis, but finding time to have fun with friends; of our courting days; and of course the food we used to enjoy when we hung out with each other. We didn't eat much of the food on campus, which I felt was pricey but not that tasty, choosing instead to walk the short distance to the nearby Broadway Fair shops for lunch. There we found a gem, Malaysian Gourmet, and it's so good to see that business is still running strong as ever. Four years ago, when we revisited Malaysian Gourmet on a trip to Perth, we found that the noodles wasn't quite as good as 10 years ago, and that was because uncle had delegated the cooking responsibilities to another person. Well, I'm happy to report that this cook has perfected uncle's recipe for char kuey teow, as it was as good as the master's cooking himself. I saw uncle at the shop, but my friend has confirmed that he no longer does the cooking. The food was still delicious!
The no-frills small shop with enough room inside just for ordering (communal dining space is outside):
The boy wanted Soy Chicken Rice, and he ate it all without complaints!
Our usual order of char kuey teow:
And hor fun:
I hope this place is still running when we visit Perth again!
